About Life Ride

The AIDS Charity ride idea was created by a group of gay bikers from the various motorcycle clubs discussing a fundraising event.  Chris Wenzel, the 1997 President of The Satyrs Motorcycle Club of Los Angeles, organized the very first AIDS Charity Ride in 1998.  The Ride was held every year during the month of April as the clubs convened to discuss the charity groups that they would raise funds.  The four original founding clubs are: the Satyrs Motorcycle Club of Los Angeles, The Oedipus Motorcycle Club of Los Angeles, The Warrior Motorcycle Club of Los Angeles and The LoBOCs (Long Beach/Orange County Motorcycle Club).

Sense of Urgency!

Over 54% of all new HIV infections occur among those, age 15 to 24.  Moreover, 25% of them don't even know they are infected!  The latest news from the Center for Disease Control reports that 25% of teenage girls have an STD.  We must bring education & prevention programs to this age group immediately.  This sexually active group could create a "new wave" of AIDS if we do nothing.

3 agency programs have been selected to bring immediate education, prevention and awareness to this vulnerable age group.

Shanti Orange County "Sea of Hearts" program, Spot-U "Now that You Know" program, LA Gay & Lesbian Center's Youth Service Dept. "Street Smart HIV Education & Prevention" program.  All of these programs specifically target at-risk youth regardless of gender, race, age or sexual orientation.  The primary mission in each of these programs is to bring outreach, HIV awareness, education and prevention to the youth population.

There's more to charities than you may know:

Collaborating with a respected organization with the know how of scrutinizing the efficient use of donor dollars, ensures the funds are being used for direct services and not used to pay salaries, overhead expenses and other non-direct services.  When donors make a personal direct contribution to their favorite charity, the dollars end-up in a general fund and may never go to directly benefit those who need the services. The Foundation want to make sure that your donations go to those who need the help and reviews each selected organization for IRS compliance guidelines, fundraising efficiency to delivered-service ratios, auditing and agreement compliance and measured results.

LifeRide ensures that every donor dollar is maximized through a series of audits and compliance reviews by a beneficiary committee.  Donations are limited to direct services and prevention and education programs.  Funds cannot be used to pay for salaries, indirect overhead expenses or capital expenses.  The Foundation is also responsible for all administrative, logistical, legal and vendor compliance.  Agencies receiving funds must sign an agreement ensuring they will submit compliance reports to the Foundation or they must refund the grant monies to be redistributed to those in compliance.

In return the participating clubs and bikers only need to fundraising and send out viral emails.
